Need Money for College?

DKMS Blood Drive Banner

Sunday, February 12, 2012

If you're here, you've probably been considering a college education. And if you're like most people, you've probably been wondering how you are going to pay for it. We can help!

The first step in the college financial aid process is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Need help completing the FAFSA? On one afternoon each year, College Goal Sunday stages help sessions at different sites across the state of Kansas. Come and go as you please between 2 and 4 p.m. to meet with financial aid professionals and get hands-on help with the FAFSA.

This program is free. It's a service supported by the Lumina Foundation and coordinated by the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (KASFAA). The annual event is sponsored by USA Funds and Lumina Foundation for Education.

If you're thinking about college - and worrying about the money - you've come to the right place. Decide where you'll get help, and remember to bring the things you'll need.

Salina Journal Article - Remembering on Veterans Day

Casey Collier has only to look at the tattoo on his right arm to be reminded of the importance of Veterans Day.

During Collier's two tours of duty in Iraq in the U.S. Marine Corps between 2004 and 2006, he saw a number of men die in action. These included Medal of Honor winner Jason Dunham, a corporal in the Marine Corps who was killed in action when he deliberately covered an enemy grenade to save his fellow Marines.

Driving Rumsfeld

Hays resident Garrett Pfannenstiel, 25, joined the U.S. Army Reserves at age 17, following his older brother's example.

"Our plan was to be in the same unit, but he ended up at West Point and I got deployed," Pfannenstiel said.

Pfannenstiel spent a year in Iraq as a logistics specialist. He also provided security and driving services for distinguished guests including Donald Rumsfeld, then secretary of defense under President George W. Bush, Afghanistan commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal and Kansas Rep. Jerry Moran.

Military-friendly

Collier and Pfannenstiel are among several veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and the Gulf War 20 years earlier who now attend Salina Area Technical School to learn practical skills to help them reintegrate into civilian life.

Laura Duran, vice president of student services, said a lot of veterans enroll at the school to learn skills, and they use their veteran benefits to pay for it.

"We're a very military-friendly school, and we do everything we can to support our veterans," she said.
