Business Administrative Technology Assessment Plan FY10

Program goal: “During their coursework, students will develop the technical, communication, critical thinking and interpersonal/workplace skills necessary for employment. “

Area:  Business Administrative
Technology

Responsibility:  Glenda Mummert

Timelines: Yellow - September 15; Green - May 31

Measure:

  1.  Students will average 2.5 or better on each individual competency completed in the competency profile.
  2. 80% of students will score “meet expectations” or better on the student evaluation form.

Explain how you plan on measuring learning?

Each technical program assesses technical, communication, and critical thinking skills using a variety of instructional strategies, including tests, projects, quizzes, homework, hands-on demonstrations, etc. Student mastery of these skills is documented in the competency profile. Competency profiles are stored in the registrar’s office.

Each technical program assesses interpersonal/workplace skills using a variety of instructional strategies. Student development of these skills is documented in the student evaluation form.

What were the end of year results?

Any other “indirect” measures of student learning? Graduate and job placement data? Student survey data? NOCTI scores? % of students meeting graduation requirements?

  • Students averaged 89.63% on all competencies.  However, not all students averaged 2.5 or better on individual competencies in large part due to absences.
    • The average student assessment in BC 175 Job Preparation was 2.61.
    • The average student assessment in BC 194 & 195 In-House Training & On-The-Job Training was 2.51.
  • Four students returned in August as second semester students, two full-time and two part-time.  One graduated at semester, two part-time continued second semester and graduated.  One full-time returned part-time in January in an effort to complete courses needed for graduation, but was unsuccessful, dropping the program.  Thirteen students started the program in August, ten full-time and three part-time.  Five full-time students dropped during first semester.  One full-time student started in January. This resulted in a 53% graduation rate.
  • All graduates completed the NOCTI testing – scores are not available yet.
  • As of May 21, 2010 – four students have jobs, one is interviewing and three are seeking employment.
  • All graduates completed a resume and cover letter, but not all graduates completed interviews.
  • Attendance has been a major issue this year for May graduates.

What changes need to be made in teaching or the curriculum?

  • A strong effort will be made to encourage better attendance next year using guest speakers from business & industry throughout the fall semester.  Many graduates did work on assignments at home, but missed lectures/group discussions/value added assignments/instructor assistance with projects due to absences.
  • Job placement has been an issue this year due to graduates needing the full length of the semester to complete assignments to graduate due to absences during the year.  Improving attendance will allow students to complete work earlier in semester making them eligible for OWE opportunities and to begin job searches earlier.
  • It is also recommended that in order to focus on retention that pre-entrance testing with Wonderlic testing software or OPAC testing software be implemented with pre-entrance interviews with instructor.
