Automotive Technology Assessment Plan FY10

Program goal: “During their coursework, students will develop the technical, communication, critical thinking and interpersonal/workplace skills necessary for employment. “

Area: Auto Technology

Responsibility:  Tom Conway, Brian Haden

Timelines: Yellow - September 15; Green - May 31; Purple May 31, 2011

Measure:

  1.  Students will average 2.5 or better on each individual competency completed in the competency profile.

Explain how you plan on measuring learning?

Each technical program assesses technical, communication, and critical thinking skills using a variety of instructional strategies, including tests, projects, quizzes, homework, hands-on demonstrations, etc. Student mastery of these skills is documented in the competency profile. Competency profiles are stored in the registrar’s office.

Each technical program assesses interpersonal/workplace skills using a variety of instructional strategies. Student development of these skills is documented in the student evaluation form.

What were the end of year results?

Any other “indirect” measures of student learning? Graduate and job placement data? Student survey data? NOCTI scores? % of students meeting graduation requirements?

  1. All competencies for all classes were completed with a 2.5 or above for all 6 graduates of the Automotive Technology program.
  2. Technical, communication and critical thinking skills were assessed and documented in the competencies profiles for each student.
  3. All graduating students completed NOCTI testing---scores not available for review at this time.
  4. All students completed the required resume class offered at SATC.
  5. As of May 17, 2010, 2 students are out on OJT and 3 students have a job after graduation in the automotive field.
  6. ATTENDANCE is a major problem in the Automotive Technology program.
  7. Nine students started their second year in the two year program.  One dropped at the end of the first semester, two others had major attendance problems which could not be helped because of personal problems.  Six students completed the program, for a 66% graduation rate.

What changes need to be made in teaching or the curriculum?

  1. We, as a college, have appointed a committee to address and correct the attendance problem. The proposed solutions will be implemented next calendar year.  We will reevaluate how attendance affects the results next year.
  2. We need to test students continuously on equipment. Being a two year program, the students may lose retention of equipment usage from the first year of the program.

Follow Up

We have added an attendance policy to the Automotive Technology Handbook.
