Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes
February 19, 2010

Members Present:  Barbara Coleman, Janice Ramsey, Tom Phillips, Jeramie Rick, John Black, and Trish Hayden, chairman

Members Absent:  Janet Fisher and Greg Goode.

Minutes:    The minutes of the February 12, 2010 meeting were approved electronically and have been posted on the SATC website.

General Education Math Placement Score

Trish Hayden met with John Black to discuss entrance scores for different math classes in school year 2010-2011.

Recommendations are as follows:

  1.  There should be no entrance requirement for math classes which are part of a regular program or department.

 

  1.  Students enrolled in the CAD department should take the COMPASS Algebra test in addition to the COMPASS Pre-Algebra test.   Algebra scores will be used for planning purposes only.  
  1. General Education Technical Math is an entry-level class.  There is no entrance requirement for Technical Math classes.

 

  1. The entrance requirement for General Education Intermediate Algebra is an ACT COMPASS Algebra score of 28.  ACT research indicates that a student who scores 28 on the Algebra section of COMPASS has a 50% chance of receiving a grade of “C” or higher in a standard Intermediate Algebra class.
  1. The entrance requirement for General Education College Algebra is an ACT COMPASS Algebra score of 50.  ACT research indicates that a student who scores 48 on the Algebra section of COMPASS has a 50% chance of receiving a grade of “C” or higher in a standard College Algebra class.

 

  1. Admission requirements may be waived under proper circumstances.  Any waiver is requires prior approval by the class instructor and school administrators.
  1. No recommendations are made regarding the Electronics Technology program.  Ms. Hayden will discuss that matter with Nate Davis.

 

Motion to Approve:
Janice Ramsey moved that the foregoing recommendations be adopted with the exception of electronics students, which will be handled as a separate matter.   The motion was seconded by Tom Phillips and passed unanimously.
Mrs. Hayden was asked to find information regarding the relationship of ACT COMPASS Scores and Regular ACT Mathematics scores.

Motion:
John Black moved that admission requirements be reported to the Academic Affairs for inclusion in class descriptions.   The motion was seconded by Tom Phillips and unanimously approved. 
The secretary will forward the appropriate information to the chairman of the SATC Academic Affairs Committee.

The next meeting will be in the Dental Assistant classroom at 10:50 am on Friday, February 26, 2010.    

Trish Hayden will recommend specific ACT Mathematics scores for general education math classes.  John Black will present a course outline for CAD Math
