Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes
May 15, 2009

Members Present:  Barb Coleman, Tom Phillips, Janet Fisher, Jeramie Rick, Trish Hayden, John Black, Janice Ramsey

Agenda:

Minutes:  Jeramie moved and Tom seconded that the minutes from the 05/08/09 meeting be accepted.  (It was great to see these two working together!)  The minutes were approved.

General Statement, Assessment Goals, and the Role and Purpose of the Assessment Committee:
John put together a summary of the above.  The Assessment Committee agreed that it was a good one and we would only need to “tweak” it a little:

General Statement:

• Through their study at SATC, students will develop competence in four areas which SATC faculty has identified as the foundation of technical (add “and general”) education.
• Change Work Skills to Technical Skills
• Change Workplace Habits to Workplace Skills

Short Definition of Assessment Goals:

• Change Work Skills to Technical Skills
• Change “verbal communication” to “oral communication”
• Delete the words “So-called”

Statement of the role and purpose of the committee:

• Delete the words “of student achievement”

Assessment Committee:

• This following sentence was added before the last sentence:  The committee will evaluate institutional effectiveness by analyzing various data.

John as made the revisions to the summary, and it is attached.

General Observations  and Things to Consider:

• Next year students who are attending to receive certificates only will not be required to take Technical Communications.
• We need to create a website in order to publish our annual report.
• In Service in August…who will do what?
• Is the Performance Agreement going to be a project of this committee?
• Both John and Trish agreed that the Measurement Form could be used for Math and Technical Communications.

To be Accomplished Before the End of School:
The committed needs to decide the following rotation issues:

• How many people will be on the committee?
• Should it be a requirement that there always be a dean on the committee?
• Should there always be a member of the Assessment Committee who is also on the Academic Affairs Committee?

Next Meeting:

• “Rotation” will be the only topic.
• The committee will meet in the Dental Lab, after the BBQ on Friday, May 22nd . 
• John said we are not to meet until after the Kumbaya.

Janet moved, and Jeramie seconded that the meeting be adjourned.  The motion was carried.
