Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes
April 13, 2009

Members Present:  Janice Ramsey, Tom Phillips, Janet Fisher, John Black, Jeramie Rick, Greg Goode, Trish Hayden

Members Absent:  Barb Coleman

Agenda:
Select a Chair and Secretary:
John Black was selected as chair and Trish Hayden was selected as secretary.

New Member:
Jeramie Rick volunteered and was approved to be a new member of the committee.

Update on the Curriculum Committee by John Black:
John, who is on the Curriculum Committee, said that that committee has met and wants to include assessment within their committee.  The Assessment Committee may become a sub committee of the Curriculum Committee.  We need to keep this in mind as we go along.  We can decide if we want to do this in the near future.

Note:
Members of the committee were asked to review several models ahead of time from various institutions including Cochise, Arapahoe CC, CC of Aurora, and Wichita Area TC.

We will be assessed in 4 areas:

• Critical thinking (very important)
• Communication
• Tech Skills
• Work Habits (This is one that we will need to add on.  The business and industry leaders have asked us to address this.)

Ideas and observations from Greg:

• Prefers the term “measurement” rather than assessment
• We don’t have a lot of guidance from HLC.
• The main thing that we will be asked by HLC is what the results were, what we learned from them, and what our plan of action is…What we did as a result of the analysis.
• We need to make this as simple as possible.  A 2-page summary should be enough for the HLC.
• We will try to have this completed by August.
• We might need to hire a ½ time Director of Analysis.

Getting started:

• We need to adopt institutional goals.
• Ask each department to include these goals in their department goals.
• We have program goals now, but not measurements.
• Greg recommended that we set up the plans once a year, and that they be available for public view on our web site.

Greg likes the assessment form set up by Cochise.  Aurora used the same format.  It includes:

• Intended student learning outcomes
• Assessment process including why, what, how, when and who
• Criteria for success
• Summary of results
• Analysis of the data collected
• Action planned base on the results and analysis
