Assessment of Student Learning

What is “assessment?”
Assessment measures student learning and is guided by two questions: are students learning what we want them to learn? How do we know?
What do we assess (what do we want them to learn)?
During their program coursework, students develop the technical skills necessary for employment. They also develop communication, critical thinking, and interpersonal/workplace skills necessary for employment. These four skills make our students more productive members of society and prepare them for a life of learning.
How do we know students are learning this?
Each program assesses technical, communication, critical thinking, and interpersonal/workplace skills. General education classes assess communication and/or critical thinking.
At the end of the year instructors analyze this information to improve teaching and learning.
How is this information made available to the public?
The information is made available to individual program advisory committees. Assessment information is included in monitoring reports at board meetings. It is also available on this website.
