The Program

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that through 2018, dental assisting will be one of the fastest growing occupations in the country, and with the pressing need for skilled individuals in this area, Salina Tech’s Dental Assistant Program can be the first step in a stable and rewarding career.

Students who enroll in this program will learn how to perform a wide range of duties important to dental care, including: chairside assisting, first aid, radiology, office and lab procedures, and practice management. In addition to classroom work, students receive over 300 hours of real-world clinical experience at a variety of dental facilities so that when they do graduate, they can feel confident in their ability to do their job, regardless of the position they are in.

Students admitted to the Salina Tech Dental Assistant Program are subject to contact with blood and/or body fluids.  The Salina Tech Dental Assistant Program follows all OSAP infection control guidelines, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen, Exposure Control Guidelines, and the Universal and Standard Precautions throughout the pre-clinical, lab and clinical experiences.


Program Outcomes

At the completion of this program, students will be able to:

Institutional:

1.) Demonstrate the ability to think critically.
2.) Demonstrate proficiency in technical program learning outcomes.
3.) Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication.
4.) Develop positive work habits and interpersonal skills needed for employment.

Program:

1.) Assist in clinical dental procedures.
2.) Manipulate dental materials to perform laboratory procedures associated with dental treatments.
3.) Apply principles of radiation hygiene and safety, utilizing correct techniques to obtain diagnostic radiographs.
4.) Demonstrate concepts of infection control.
5.) Gather and record diagnostic, patient, and treatment information.
6.) Provide patient education.
7.) Assist in medical and dental emergencies.
8.) Perform basic dental business office procedures.
9.) Maintains confidentiality and professional ethics.
10.) Participates and communicates effectively as a healthcare team member.
11.) Salina Tech Dental Assistant students are required to take the DANB test in order to fulfill program requirements.
