Assessment of Student Learning

Salina Area Technical College faculty members evaluate mastery of student learning through assessment activities that include an assessment and action plan, mapping, and using rubrics. The assessment and action plan evaluates how well the program is accomplishing institutional “core” learning outcomes and program learning outcomes. In addition, students are assessed using WorkKeys Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information tests. WorkKeys is a job skills assessment measuring skills that employers believe are valuable for any occupation. An end of program third-party test is also administered to the students. These assessments are program-specific, and in most cases, the students receive a certificate if they pass the test.

Three of the four institutional “core” learning outcomes serve as program outcomes for the general education courses. The rubrics used to evaluate these programs usually cover two of the outcomes.

Mapping validates that institutional core and program learning outcomes are embedded in the program curriculum.

rubric is created to provide consistency in scoring for each assignment.

An assessment and action plan is created to identify what data will be collected, how it will be collected, the results, and an action plan based on results.
